Italo Calvino was an important Italian journalist, essayist and novelist of the 20th century. His works published in the 1970s show a remarkable combination of fantasy and surrealism with satirical sense of humor and depth that he became well-known not only in Italy but throughout the Western world.Calvino's later works were more experimental. He tried to combine fantasy, folklore, fairy tales and science fiction to produce something new in contemporary fiction.
